Sustainable and efficient. We turn waste into pure energy
Getting the best and most out of waste in an environmentally friendly way – that is the task of thermal waste utilization. Our dedicated, well-coordinated team of specialists and generalists uses state-of-the-art technology to produce huge amounts of electricity for the people of the entire region. Every year, more than 700,000 tons of waste are incinerated at GMVA Niederrhein and used to generate energy. The majority – over 350,000 MWh – is fed into the public power grid and supplies around 100,000 households in Oberhausen with electricity.

District heating: Sustainable byproduct with maximum performance
Incinerating waste is an extremely hot business. Temperatures of up to 1,200°C prevail in the plant’s four boilers. Of course, this thermal energy can also be used further. The energy is generated by means of combined heat and power generation and fed into the district heating network. This is by no means a trivial matter, but 50,000 to 150,000 MWh per year. This corresponds to the calorific value of 990,000 liters of heating oil – i.e. around 30 articulated lorries, each with a tank capacity of 33,000 liters. The GMVA therefore not only supplies district heating, but also helps to conserve valuable natural resources.
